“Apparently this is the only hotel created by Frank Gehry where each of the unique 43 guestrooms and suites promises to enchant guests  with exceptional designer touches and enviable views of the countryside, medieval town of Elciego or the striking architecture.Since its unveiling in 2006 this masterpiece created by Frank Gehry to house the Hotel Marqués de Riscal has become a highly sought after contemporary, luxury retreat. Design, art, gastronomy, wine and the lush landscape all combine to create a memorable sojourn at The City of Wine.

Design, art, gastronomy, wine and the lush landscape all combine to create a memorable sojour…

The vision of Frank O. Gehry was to create a 21st century château, an icon for one of the oldest wineries in the Rioja region, Vinos de los Herederos de Marqués de Riscal that connect the historic legacy with the modern art and wine nature.

City of wine-Marqués de Riscal has fused the concepts of tradition and avant-gardism, resulting in the perfect integration between its old facilities and the new building designed by Frank O. Gehry.  City of Wine is the Spanish Chateâu for the 21st Century.

The building is a composition of rectilinear prisms that float above the ground by three super columns that support the building. The building rises nine meters above the ground and crosses the underground wine store of Marqués de Riscal to support itself with the three super columns.

“This allows spectacular views in all levels, to see the vineyards, Elciego, and the mountains of the Sierra de Cantabria as a background. Everything is wrapped in cascades of titanium (Canopies) colored in pink, gold and silver symbolizing the reddish hues of red wine, the mesh of the wine bottle of Marqués de Riscal and the capsule of the bottle.”

Hotel Marqués de Riscal, A Luxury Collection Hotel

In the heart of the Rioja Alavesa region in Spain, the Hotel opened its doors the 1st of September 2006 and celebrated its official Grand Opening Event in October 2006, with the special visit of the King of Spain, its Majesty Don Juan Carlos. Designed and built by Frank O. Gehry, one of the world’s most renowned architects and author of works of art like the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
The Hotel Marqués de Riscal, A Luxury Collection Hotel merges deep rooted wine-growing tradition with twenty-first century avant-garde design.

Nestled in the renowned Vinos de los Herederos del Marques de Riscal’s vineyard in the medieval village of Elciego, the hotel’s spectacular curves, titanium roof and asymmetry of walls provide an elegant contrast to the historic wine cellars designed in 1858 by the architect Ricardo Bellsola. The hotel’s 43 luxury rooms and suites, each unique and different in their shapes and offered views, are “thrown” in two wings connected by a spectacular suspended footbridge.

“Gehry’s personal and exclusive project of interior design characterized by its forms, colors and materials, offers an authentic avant-garde vision. The leather and raw maple wood of the suites the dark marble of the bathrooms, and furniture by Gehry (such as the Cloud lamps) and by other famous architects like Alvar Aalto melt harmoniously with the most advanced technology also it combine perfectly with avant-garde furniture, lamps and headboards, designed exclusively for the Marques de Riscal Hotel and the quality and comfort of The Luxury Collection beds and linens.”
