Jura’s Polished Diamonds

Domaine du Pélican have released their latest vintage, the thrilling 2017s, alongside their first ever single vineyard wine, the 2016 En Barbi. Described a year ago by Julia Harding on JancisRobinson.com as “Polished Jura Diamonds” Pélican seem to have taken their jewel-like Jurassien wines to another level with these new offerings.

Frost at the end of April hit the vineyards hard and resulted in a crop loss of between 50 to 70%. Thankfully what remained benefitted from a warm, benign and stress-free summer. Disease pressure was very low indeed and ripening was completed quickly. Harvest began at the end of August, the earliest vintage in the Jura since 2003. Winemaker and part-owner, François Duvivier, considers the 2017 reds to be “Concentrated whilst keeping their freshness” and the whites to be “rich but blessed with beautiful balance.” For their generosity, style and authenticity these are Jura wines not to be missed. A special mention must go to the single vineyard debutant, en Barbi 2016. A complex Chardonnay that shows just what this little-understood but exciting artisanal region is capable of. A wine as intense and minerally as anything we have tried in Burgundy of late – all crushed rocks, verbena and salts – an unforgettable cuvée we hope to be seeing more of with future releases. For now there are a maximum of 132 magnums for the whole of the UK!

We are delighted that these delicious bottles will be on show at our Portfolio Tasting in London on the 6th of February. You can discover the full Pelican story and all of the tasting notes for the wines listed below online, by clicking here
