ASI Announces Winner of the ASI Contest Best Sommelier Europe, Africa & Middle East 2024
Belgrade, Serbia (November 15, 2024) – The Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) is pleased to announce the winner of the ASI Contest Best Sommelier Europe, Africa & Middle East 2024. The event, held in Belgrade, Serbia, from November 11-15, drew a distinguished audience of sommeliers, wine professionals, and enthusiasts eager to witness this prestigious competition unfold.
As the contest reached its climax, anticipation ran high among the crowd as the semi-finalists’ ranks were gradually revealed one by one. With only a select three advancing to the final competition, and with it the chance to win the title, each subsequent announcement brought with it heightened anticipation, and an emotional mix of pride, anticipation and suspense as candidates saw their hard work and dedication celebrated. For each competitor, the journey to Belgrade had been long and challenging, for many beginning with a national title and culminating on this prominent international stage.
The tension was palpable as the semi-finalists were narrowed down to four. Only three of the four would reach the final. With the announcement of Jonathan Gouveia of Denmark as fourth place, a sense of relief and rejoicing for this year’s finalists, Mikk Parre of Estonia, Pascaline Lepeltier of France, and Martynas Pravilonis of Lithuania. The trio then immediately drew to determine the order for the final competition. Mikk Parre drew the opportunity to compete first. They faced a series of rigorous tasks designed to test their expertise, precision, and composure under pressure. Each of the finalists demonstrated impressive knowledge, acute tasting skills, and seamless service, displaying the exceptional talent and passion that define the sommelier profession.
After a series of challenging rounds, Martynas Pravilonis was announced as the second runner-up, leaving the remaining two candidates in a final moment of suspense. Finally, amidst cheers and applause, ASI President William Wouters took the stage to reveal the victor and proud recipient of the title of ASI Best Sommelier Europe, Africa & Middle East 2024.
