In a unique event on 2 July at the exclusive Couvent des Cordeliers in Beaune, records were smashed during Sotheby’s auction devoted exclusively to Burgundy. Achieving €2 million / $2.1 million, the sale marked the latest chapter of “The Epicurean’s Atlas” – the most important and valuable wine collection ever to come to the market, sourced from the legendary cellar of visionary collector and epicurean Pierre Chen. Featuring the crème de la crème of Burgundy wines from Mr. Chen’s cellar, “Live in the Vines” also marked the first single-owner wine auction to be staged in a region famed for its Grand Cru vineyards.

The sale followed hot on the heels of “The Ultimate Champagnes”, the first-ever auction devoted exclusively to Champagne, at Sotheby’s in Paris on 20 June, which also set a number of new world record prices. Representing the first chapter of The Epicurean’s Atlas in Europe, this particularly special episode in the global sale series realised €1.35 million / $1.45 million.

Overall, the two historic French auctions brought a combined total of €3.3 million / $3.6 million – a result that stands comfortably as the most valuable Single Owner wine collection ever sold by Sotheby’s in France. Across both sales, there was global participation from 29 countries, with a significant number of lots sold achieving prices above their high estimates (45%) and an average hammer price per lot of €7,198 (almost twice the average lot value for wine sales at Sotheby’s globally between January and June 2024).

The journey of The Epicurean’s Atlas across the globe continues with sales in New York in September and Hong Kong in November.

SALES OVERVIEW

“Live In The Vines”

“The strong activity we saw across all channels in the Live In The Vines auction in Beaune, including a full room with spirited in-person bidding, is testament to the outstanding quality of Pierre Chen’s wines, which drew competition from savvy wine collectors worldwide, and provides a strong indication of the importance of being present in this special location in the global wine market. Pierre Chen is a visionary collector who is intimately linked with Beaune and the wider Burgundy region. We are delighted that Sotheby’s, in partnership with Pierre Chen, has been able to continue to grow its presence and role within the community and market here, by offering this sale to our local and international clients immediately following the conclusion of the Musique et Vin festival, an important fixture of our annual calendar. In particular, it was incredibly special for us to see a number of new world record prices being set in the Beaune saleroom at the 13th century Caves du Couvent des Cordeliers.”

Last November, the eagerly-awaited first offering of wines from Mr. Chen’s cellar realised US$16.8 million in a two-day auction at Hong Kong’s Mandarin Oriental – among the highest totals ever achieved for a single wine sale. While the 25,000 bottles to be sold across the course of The Epicurean’s Atlas auction series represent just a fraction of Mr. Chen’s vast collection – assembled over some forty years with care, connoisseurship and a keen palate – their sale nonetheless represents a defining moment for the market.
