About the Louvre
Former royal residence, the Palais du Louvre has accompanied the history of France for eight centuries. Opened to the public in 1793 as a universal museum, the Louvre presents some of the most beautiful collections in the world covering nine millennia and five continents. Divided into eight departments, more than 35,000 universally admired works are on display within the walls of the Palace, including the Mona Lisa, the Victory of Samothrace, and the Venus de Milo. As the guardian of this unique heritage that it shares and brings to life, the Louvre is the most visited museum in the world.
More than ever, welcoming all visitors remains a priority for the museum: each year, nearly one out of every two visitors visits its collections free of charge. The Nocturne du Samedi, created in January 2019, has been a great success: this free event, held on the first Saturday of each month, brought together more than 160,000 people in 2019, mainly families and local residents, who benefited from a rich and festive media offer.
